Sudan gained its independence in January 1956 and has since steadily built a new nation on the African continent.

Unfortunately, it is shaken by long lasting civil wars in the southern to the eastern regions and along the border to Eritrea which have negatively impacted upon the recent attempts to kick-start tourism growth in the country.

Nonetheless, Sudan's history dates back to the year 2000BC, where it was a prosperous empire with a sophisticated civilization and it has the largest number (about 1,000) of pyramids in the world.
